Band Members:
Eric Kehoe, 19 - Guitar/Vocals
Bill Kahler, 19 - Piano/Keyboards
Joe Girolamo, 17 - Drums/Percussion
Band History:
Eric and I (Bill) began making music together in 2001, each as single-instrumentalists.
We began to build a repitoire and slowly began to learn how to write songs in a
punk-rock band, where we were joined by Joe in 2003. After our tastes broadened
and our musical knowledge expanded, Eric branched off and began writing songs
that were definitely a step in a different direction than we had been used to.
We began adapting some of the previous songs we had written as well as writing
songs based on our new influences and before we knew it, Duffy was a
full-fledged project. We released the Just Take It In EP in 2005, and have been
on tour forever in the Great Lakes region since.
Where did the band name originate?
Duffy is actually Eric's dad's nickname given to him by Eric's grandpa when he
was a youngster.
What inspired you to start a band?
Watching bands on TV and in concerts, I always thought it would be the coolest
thing to have a bunch of people wanting to listen to music that you wrote. It's
the best job in the world to do something that you love for a living.
What are some of your influences?
We're definitely influenced by the greatest songwriters in the world, The
Beatles, as well as Wilco, Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Bob Dylan, Limbeck,
Coldplay, etc. All three of us listen to a wide range of music and it's
exhibited in our songwriting.
What was your first song?
At first, we adapted songs from our previous band, such as Step and Days Left,
but the first song we pulled together as a band was Home Tonight.
Where and when was your first show?
What was it like?
We debuted ourselves at the Roseville Theatre in April 2004. It was definitely
an experiment at the time, and looking back, it's hard to recognize ourselves as
the same band.
About how many people were in
attendance?
20-25 tops.
What's your fan base like?
It's very diverse as I think we cater to a wide range of tastes, from folk to
blues to rock. It's nice seeing our friends and fans bring their parents and
everyone can enjoy the music.
What's the coolest thing a fan has
done for you?
We played in Davison, MI last summer and after we returned home, a fan had
created a MySpace "fandom" for us, as well as putting our music on her profile
and really spreading the word about it. It was unique in that it was the first
time we got to have our music heard by people we had absolutely no ties with,
and it was cool how well-received we were.
Do your parents support it?
All of our parents have been very supportive, especially in the loaning of
equipment, basements, vans, time, etc. We love our parents.
Favorite thing about being in a
band?
Being able to play our music for people and be proud of it.
Whats your favorite song to play
live?
My personal favorite is Van Dyke, because it's one of those songs that you need
to rock out on.
What bands would you like to tour
with?
I'd love to be on tour with Wilco someday, as well as Limbeck, The Format, and
Death Cab. I think our music would definitely mesh with those bands.
Whats the main goal of the band?
I think we all agree that we should write the best music possible. I don't think
you should worry about making money or writing music just simply so that other
people will like it. If you write music that you're proud of, then people will
enjoy it and the rest of that stuff will come.
How have things changed for the
band since you started?
Our musicianship is much better, and we're a lot more confident because of
that.
If you could say one thing to the
people reading this right now who have never heard you, what would it be?
If you enjoy music, you'll enjoy Duffy. Give us a listen.
